L'institution du français "révolutionné": Construction du sujet de la langue dans le Dictionnaire national et anecdotique (1790)

However, the referent of the us is'nt the people: it takes the features of Mr Josse, a character become, thanks to a Molière's counterpart, the type of the good middle-class man, enemy of the "buzz words" by Boursault, and described by Chantreau like a honest father, recently promoted as voter. The revolutionary rupture does'nt so involve the swing of a oligarchic to a democratic conception of the subject of the language: it moves, and, admittedly, widens its social base." Au début de la Révolution apparaît, dans les dictionnaires aristocrates, un nous clivé, écartelé entre l'usage qu'il constate et les valeurs qu'il défend. Opposant le " nous " de la modernité révolutionnaire aux " ancêtres " de l'Ancien Régime, le Dictionnaire national et anecdotique du patriote Chantreau présente l'usage nouveau comme la langue commune. Le référent du nous n'est cependant pas le peuple : il prend les traits de Monsieur Josse, personnage devenu, à la faveur d'une réplique Molière, le type du bourgeois avisé, indéfectible ennemi des " mots à la mode " chez Boursault, et décrit par Chantreau comme un brave père de famille, fraîchement promu électeur. La rupture révolutionnaire n'entraîne donc pas le basculement d'une conception oligarchique à une conception démocratique du sujet de la langue : elle déplace, et, il est vrai, élargit son assise sociale
